7 Inch Round (RD Pattern) Halogen 60/55W Headlight
The GS500 makeover project needed a headlight. I wanted a 7 inch version. It needed to have a 60/55W bulb so that it provided decent illumination and it also needed to be as cheap as possible. Ebay threw up this Yamaha RD type headlight. It looks nicely made, with chrome rim, black plastic shell and H4 bulb. The shell also had plenty of space for hiding wiring. As supplied, it comes with square rubber side mountings. I'm not sure how the RD light fits as standard, but I swapped these out for some 3D printed versions for my application. (The headlight mounts on the GS are already rubber mounted, I didn't need double rubber!)
As supplied, when fitted to the bike, the lens looked like it needed rotating just a bit. Like most headlights, it’s held in the rim using spring clips. Unlike most other headlights I’ve encountered, the spring locations in the rim had been peened over. It made removing and replacing the clips more awkward, but it was doable.
Sidelight bulbs often seem to be supplied in a yellow/orange colour. Very fine abrasive paper will remove this if you’d prefer a standard clear bulb.
For around £28 from
EBAY, I think it looks better than the ubiquitous cheap LED versions that are currently available.
It's worth noting that should you wish to mount a similar light to a GS500, you may need to make some modifications. My bike used to be a fully faired 2004 'F' version. The fairing mount welded to the headstock meant that the headlight wouldn't fit the standard GS500 mounts. You could grind back the fairing mount, but I wanted to keep it intact in case I wanted to refit the fairing in the future. Instead I made slightly longer mounts using some 4mm aluminium plate.
For an unfaired, standard GS, it might just bolt on, but I can't say that for certain.
